“Ondoy” Forced Extension of Deadline
of Photo Contest with Climate Change Theme

MANILA, PHILIPPINES, September 30, 2009. – The devastating impacts of “Ondoy” forced the organizers of the 2009 Water is Life Photo Contest to extend the deadline of the submission of entries to October 14, 2009.

The special focus of this year’s contest and theme is to visualize the causes and adverse impacts of climate change on water resources in the country. And the chilling impact of “Ondoy” brought home that point.

The issue of climate change is highly relevant to the Philippines since the country is especially vulnerable to its adverse impacts considering that that majority of its people are mired in poverty, with livelihoods highly dependent on fragile natural resources and living in settlements extremely vulnerable to climatic events.

The organizers of this contest are the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), National Water Resources Board (NWRB), German Agency for Technical Cooperation (GTZ) and the Philippine Water Partnership (PWP).

This photo contest is open to all professional and amateur photographers who are Philippine residents and who are at least 18 years old as of January 1, 2009.

The top three prizes for this contest are: First Prize – P25,000.00, Second Prize – P20,000.00, and Third Prize – P15,000.00. Prizes will also be awarded for the People’s Choice Awards which are based on the popular votes of people who visited the Photo Exhibit of Finalists.  All finalists will be awarded with a Plaque of Recognition and cash gift of P1,000.00 for those who did not win the top three prizes.

The finalists of this contest will first be shown in a photo exhibit during the National Conference on Climate Change Adaptation which will be held on October 26-27, 2009 at Diamond Hotel in Roxas Boulevard, Manila.

The winning photographs of this contest will be announced on November 5, 2009 during the final day of a three-day photo exhibit of finalists which will start on November 3, 2009 at the Activity Center in SM Megamall-A  in Mandaluyong.  The photographers whose entries were chosen as finalists will be invited to attend the opening of photo exhibit in SM Megamall-A on November 3, 2009 to personally unveil their works of art before the media and the public.
